Tour and taste your way through Boundary Country and experience the richness of life in rural BC. Cultivating the land surrounding Grand Forks dates back more than 100 years. It continues to this very day. Doukhobors once called our region Fructova, which means fruit of the valley.

The lush farmland almost always yields a bumper crop of fruit and root vegetables. Gather the clan or your foodie friends and tour the whole valley. Stop along the way at family-owned farms, orchards, and roadside markets. Indulge in the full menu of stories found in Boundary Country.

Indulge in our farm-to-plate tradition, where buying local begins with our growers. You can tell much of our heritage is rooted in agriculture in a landscape of rolling ranch lands and fruit-filled orchards. Out here, we support our farmers by buying local and eating fresh. It’s what we do. You can too at farm gates, fruit stands and our local farmer’s markets.

Get some fresh Boundary goodness at farmer’s markets in Boundary Country in summer. Stroll through a riot of colour, touring food stalls packed with fresh produce grown right in the valley, known locally as the “sunshine valley”.

Pedal and Picnic

Pedal to a picnic along the Trans Canada Trail with ingredients collected at the weekly markets. Find the perfect souvenir of your Boundary Country vacation, handmade by local artisans who exhibit and sell their work at the markets. Nosh, and snack your way through the open-air stands, indulging in homemade treats made with old-world recipes.

Talk to a farmer. Find out how your food was grown. Get their opinion on when it’s best served. Discover a new way to fix an old family favourite. Half the fun of shopping farmer’s markets is getting to know the folks you’ll meet along the way.

Say Cheese — Jerseyland Organics

Take your quest to discover where your food comes from one step further and go right to the source. Your first stop — Jerseyland Organics outside of Grand Forks. You can learn how cheese and yogurt are made the organic way. Ripe with the aroma of ripening curd, one step inside the cheese shop will whet your appetite. Fresh yogurt, dry cottage cheese, butter and sour cream are all for sale here.

Taste test or call in advance to take a tour. Explore the milking parlour, cheese factory, and cheese ageing room. Bring the whole family along to wander the on-site petting zoo, home to exotic pheasants, peacocks, goats and pot-bellied pigs.

Pride of the Valley Heritage Flour Mill

Get a glimpse into our not-too-distant past where emigrating Doukhobors milled local grains into flour. The Pride of the Valley Heritage Flour Mill, originally built in 1915, now turns out additive-free flour you’ll find in area specialty stores and at the Boundary Museum.

Explore the mill, learn how grain is transformed into flour, listen to tales of days-gone-by delivered by local characters who know the stories best. Operating as an informal welcome centre in the summertime, you can arrange a tour of the Pride of the Valley Heritage Flour Mill in winter by visiting the Boundary Museum.

Live Life at a Ranch

Escape big city life and get in touch with our rural roots. There are several ranch stays available in Boundary Country. Some will let you help out around the ranch. Haul those hay bales and get a fresh air workout. Some even have space for you to board your horse so you can adventure out and ride the range. At night, chat with other guests and ranchers over huckleberry pie. It’s all part of life on the ranch in Boundary Country!

Celebrate the Harvest

The changing colours of the trees signals the start to the harvest and Boundary Country’s fall fair season. Celebrate the harvest at either the Grand Forks Fall Fair, in August or the Rock Creek Fall Fair in September.

Dine on your favourite fair food. If it comes on a stick, all the better. Laugh at the greased pig and livestock competitions. Cheer on your favourite—Marvel at the mastery of a gymkhana event and two-step to some country tunes. Rub shoulders with the locals and vote for your favourite pie. Maybe you could enter your own in the competition.
